The resort is popular in peak season with the younger set, but out of season takes on a completely different character.
In peak season, the town is popular with the younger set, with its reputation for a hectic nightlife. Out of season, however, it takes on a different character. The resort is much more than just wonderful beaches - today it has numerous public gardens, and over a thousand species of trees have been planted around the town, ranging from the exotic magnolia and banana tree to vibrantly colourful beds of roses and azaleas. And on the outskirts, there are three forests with freshwater springs and barbecue facilities.
The city is virtually a suburb of Malaga, and the atmosphere is very Spanish, especially at weekends, with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Packed with tantalising shops, with visitors from every country and set at the centre of the town is the pedestrianised area of Calle San Miguel, the main artery of the town. This smart street is filled with boutiques and shops with a wide variety of goods on offer.
The Cuesta del Tajo, at the end of San Miguel, leads down a steep flight of steps through the old fishermen's district of El Bajondillo. This is a popular and picturesque area with with restaurants and market-style kiosks, with a wide range of souvenirs. At the bottom is the beach of El Bajondillo.
The beach area shows another side of of this vibrant town. With huge hotels, bars and restaurants, the beach area is packed throughout the summer. To the east, the Playa de Bajondillo leads to the beaches of Playamar and Los Alamos. To the west, beyond the Castillo de Santa Clara, lie the beaches of La Carihuela and Montemar.
The seafront promenade, Paseo Maritimo, extends east to Playamar and west to La Carihuela, and extends to the Benalmádena Port. The walk to La Carihuela has pleasant sea views and some dramatic rock formations, just before the old village of La Carihuela - a delightful area of picturesque simple houses and flower-clad patios. A early visit to this area before the tourists wake up shows a very different world. This area also has excellent seafood restaurants and beach bars.
