Torremolinos, Costa del Sol
Villa and Apartment Holidays
Torremolinos
is on the west of the Bay of Malaga and lies at the foot of the Sierra de Mijas
about 13km from the provincial capital of Malaga. Once a small fishing village,
Torremolinos has been the major tourist destination for the sun and beaches of
Spain since the 1950's.
The growth of tourism has generated created a more liberal and open attitude that distinguishes Torremolinos from other towns in the Costa del Sol.
Torremolinos occupies a narrow strip of coast in the eastern foothills of the Sierra de Mijas. Over recent years, the town has evolved into an attractive and appealing resort with clean sandy beaches, a wide choice of hotels and restaurants and unparalleled variety of entertainment, activities and nightlife. In peak season, Torremolinos has a great appeal for the younger set, with a reputation for hectic nightlife. But out of season, the town takes on a different character. Today Torremolinos is more Spanish, especially at weekends, with a friendly, welcome atmosphere.
The heart of the town is packed with tantalising shops, especially the pedestrianised Calle San Miguel, the town's main artery. This busy, smart street is lined with boutiques and shops offering a wide variety of goods. The Cuesta del Tajo, at the end of San Miguel, leads down through the old fishing district of El Bajondillo, a popular and picturesque area lined with restaurants and souvenirs kiosks. The beaches show a different side of Torremolinos, with huge hotels, apartment blocks, bars and restaurants, the area is packed during the summer. To the west, the Playa de Bajondillo leads to the beaches of Playamar and Los Alamos, to the east, beyond the Castillo de Santa Clara, are the beaches of La Carihuela and Montemar.
The promenade, Paseo Maritimo, extends from Playamar to La Carihuela, and continuing to Benalmadena. The walk to La Carihuela provides pleasant sea views and passes some dramatic rock formations before leading to the old fishing village of La Carihuela. This is a picturesque area of simple houses and bougainvillea-clad terraces where old men play dominoes. Many of the original cottages are unchanged and seem to belong to a different time.
Torremolinos is only 7km from Malaga Airport, with excellent road connections, buses, coaches, taxis and rental cars.
