Nerja has a population of over 12,000, and has 16 km of beaches with powdery sand and clear water which sparkles under the sun. The town has a great selection of villas and apartments for self catering holidays. All major water sports are available - here you can water ski, scuba dive and sail. Flanked to the east by a dramatic mountain range, the Sierra Almijara, the town has avoided concrete high-rise tower blocks - the old quarter of the town is almost unchanged with its narrow streets which meander around whitewashed houses with wrought iron terraces filled with geraniums.

The heart of the town is the spectacular Balcón de Europa (the "Balcony of Europe"), a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains. Here there is a wide choice of restaurants and cafes, and you can hire a horse-drawn carriage to explore the most romantic corners of the town.

The 17th century Church of El Salvador number among the town's monuments, as well as the beautiful Gardens of Capistrano Playa, which descend to Burriana Beach.

The town's most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly its fascinating caves, just three km from the centre. The caves reveal many archaeological treasures such as wall pictures over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remnants. One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed to a concert hall, where many performances are staged throughout the summer.
