Mijas, Costa del Sol
Villa and Apartment Holidays
Mijas,
in the heart of the Costa del Sol, is only 30km from Malaga airport and is one
of the largest regions within the Malaga Province. It enjoys one of the best
climates in the region, with more days of sunshine than anywhere else in Europe.
The Mijas area is a great base to explore the Costa del Sol whilst enjoying the traditional Spanish way of life.
The Mijas region has two main areas, Mijas Pueblo and Mijas Costa. Mijas Costa, consisting of Las Lagunas and La Cala de Mijas, is on the coast, and the old town of Mijas Pueblo is just 20 minutes inland at the foot of the Sierra de Mijas mountains.
Mijas Pueblo is a typical white village, common in Andalucia, with whitewashed houses, a town hall and a rare oval bull-ring, historical buildings and parks with wonderful views of the coast, beaches and the Mediterranean. Fuengirola is also visible since the village is nearly 430 meters above sea level on the mountainside. Enjoy the most amazing views in Mijas Pueblo from one of its many bars and restaurants, offering everything from pizzas to typical Spanish cuisine.
The Pueblo is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, with terraces overflowing with geraniums, red-tile roofs and archways. There are two Mudejar churches and the sanctuary of the patron saint of Mijas from the year 850. The charming old streets are home to gift and souvenir shops, including local products such as leather items, wicker-work and painted tiles.
The beautiful coastal area of Mijas Costa extends for a 12km, with wonderful golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. The beaches such as Sitio de Calahonda and La Cala are amongst the best in Spain, with their golden sands and water sports including jet-skiing, sailing and surfing. The beaches are lined with beach cafes, shops, Spanish restaurants and bars, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays, a popular street market selling fresh produce and delicacies is at La Cala.
Mijas also has seven golf courses including La Cala Resort, the largest golf resort in Spain. The climate of Mijas averages 18 degrees Centigrade, and due to its proximity to the sea it is not excessively hot in summer and little frost in winter. For this reason, many artists and writers have made Mijas Pueblo their home, enjoying the benefits of an excellent all year round climate, whilst being distant from the busier, more commercial coastal towns a few kilometres down the mountain.
Mijas is about 23km from Malaga airport, and there are several ways of travelling from the airport to Mijas, including buses, taxis and rental cars. There is no train link to Mijas Costa or Mijas Pueblo, Fuengirola is the nearest train station, and a taxi from Fuengirola to Mijas will take about 15 to 20 minutes.
