Malaga was one of the Spanish cities under the rule of the Muslims. Once part of the Emirate of Granada, the medieval Christian Spanish struggled to drive the Muslims out of Malaga. It was eventually was conquered by Christian forces on in 1487, five years before the fall of Granada.

The old historic centre of Malaga stretches from the harbour in the south and to the mountains in the north. Two rivers, the Guadalhorce and the Guadalmedina, flow through the city into the Mediterranean. Malaga has many great historic monuments paying homage to Picasso and others include the imposing Baroque Cathedral, popularly known as "La Manquita" (The One Armed Woman), referring to its somewhat lopsided appearance resulting from the missing east bell tower. On the hill overlooking the city is the state run Parador hotel, which is of great historic importance. Once a Moorish castle, today it is a wonderful place to stay or enjoy a meal whilst marvelling at the panoramic views over Malaga city and across the port to sea.

The oldest architectural remains in the city are those of the Roman theatre, dating from the first century BC, which were discovered in 1951. It has a radius of 31 metres and is 19 metres high. Studies indicate that it ceased to be used at the end of the 3rd century and that the Moors used materials from the theatre to build La Alcazaba. Although Malaga suffered much destruction during the Spanish Civil War, there is still plenty of evidence of the Moorish occupation, including the Moorish Alcazaba fortress, dating from 1065, which also features an interesting archaeological museum. La Alcazaba is a military fortress built on the remains of a Roman fort, set on a hilltop with a good view over the town and sea. The fortress originally had three protecting walls (only two still remain), over one hundred towers and a residential area with three palaces.

Tivoli World is a theme park with exciting rides, many adapted for small children and babies. There are daily shows ranging from Andalucian flamenco, the Wild West, an open-air theatre with live music, ballet and children's specials. The bull ring dates from 1874 and has a total capacity of about 14,000. There is an amazing choice of international cuisine, ranging from Texan to Russian.

The Mediterranean breezes moderate the summer heat to more comfortable levels than inland Andalucian towns and the Malaga mountains protect the city from the colder weather during winter. It is hot in July and August and a lot cooler between December and February when temperatures can fall to 13 degrees Centigrade.
