fabulous mountain views and set amongst ancient villages and towns which time has passed by.
Here you can have all the advantages of a relaxing, rural holiday without being too far off the beaten track - the ideal combination for your perfect family holiday in Andalucia.
A Remote and Beautiful Region
Lake Vinuela is a man-made reservoir about 10 minutes drive north of Velez-Malaga. The surrounding mountains and remote location allowed Lake Vinuela
to remain undiscovered until about 2000. The hills and mountains, including the 2,000 metre high Mount Maroma, make Lake Vinuela one of the most beautiful
and varied regions in Andalucia.
Lake Vinuela took its name from the nearby Andalucian village of La Vinuela which nestles in a valley supporting olive groves and lower down, cereal crops. La Vinuela is near the junction of the three rivers Velez, Guaro and Seco, which were dammed to create this huge spectacular lake.
Touring Lake Vinuela
Lake Vinuela has pleasant picnic areas on its shores, around most of which you can drive. The lake can be toured in either direction; in the north-east
direction along a stunning road is the pretty white village of Canillas de Aceituno nestling in the foothills of the Sierra Tejada mountain range with
beautiful views of the countryside and Lake Vinuela. Soon after is the village of Alcaucin, one of the treasures of the Axarquia region, with its narrow
streets hung with colourful flowers from wrought iron balconies and numerous spring-fed fountains which are still in use today.
Other villages around the lake include Alcaucin, Los Roamnes, Periana and Puente Don Manuel, and a further 15 small connurbations, all within a 10 minute drive. A little further away are the villages of Riogordo, Colmenar, Competa and Canillas de Aceituno.
Comares and Benamorgosa
On the eastern side of the lake is the fantastic white village of Comares, perched high on a conical hill. Comares has deep Moorish roots - built on Roman foundations, the ruined Muslim fort was one of the strongholds of a rebel leader of the Moors. Benamorgosa, located on the river of the same name, is surrounded by orange, lemon and other sub-tropical fruit trees covering the river valley.
Fishing, Water-Sports, Horse-Riding, Golf amd WalkingLake Vinuela has a good stock of fish especially carp, for which an easily-obtained fishing licence is required. Swimming and non-motorized water-sports are allowed.
There is a good range of self-catering holiday accommodation nestling in the hills and valleys throughout inland Costa del Sol, and the area is popular for its many sporting activities including horse riding, golf, hang gliding and walking. The countryside throughout Axarquia is the perfect base for your relaxing holiday to unwind throughout the year.
Its semi-tropical climate ensures you will enjoy its wonderful indoor and outdoor lifestyle to the full.
