Lake Vinuela, Andalucia
Villa and Apartment Holidays
Lake
Vinuela is a man-made reservoir about 10 minutes drive north of Velez-Malaga.
Surrounding mountains and remote location allowed the area to remain
undiscovered until about 2000. The hills and mountains, including the 2,000
metre high Mount Maroma, make Lake Vinuela one of the most beautiful and varied
regions in Andalucia.
Lake Vinuela has beautiful countryside, a good climate, open spaces and a tranquil way of life.
The lake took its name from the nearby village of La Vinuela which nestles in a valley supporting olive groves and lower down, cereal crops. Other villages around the lake include Alcaucin, Los Roamnes, Periana and Puente Don Manuel, and a further 15 small connurbations, all within a 10 minute drive. A little further away are the villages of Riogordo, Colmenar and Canillas de Aceituno.
The lake can be toured in either direction; in the north-east direction along a stunning road is the pretty white village of Canillas de Aceituno nestling in the foothills of the Sierra Tejada mountain range with beautiful views of the countryside and Lake Vinuela. Soon after is the village of Alcaucin, one of the treasures of the Axarquia region, with its narrow streets hung with colourful flowers from wrought iron balconies and numerous spring-fed fountains which are still in use today.
On the eastern side of the lake is the fantastic white village of Comares, perched high on a conical hill. Comares has deep Moorish roots - built on Roman foundations, the ruined Muslim fort was one of the strongholds of a rebel leader of the Moors. Benamorgosa, located on the river of the same name, is surrounded by orange, lemon and other sub-tropical fruit trees covering the river valley.
Lake Vinuela is a 50 minute drive from Malaga Airport, and just over an hour from Granada and the road network is good. There are cheap flights from the main UK airports from Monarch, Easyjet and Ryanair.
