PROVINCE DE GRANADA
Villa & Apartment Holiday Rentals
Villas to rent, apartments to rent and hotels in Granada Province and on the Costa Tropical. Granada Province offers one of widest choices in Andalucia for the holiday maker. It has a tropical coastal region and embraces the Sierra Nevada National Park, the highest mountain range in Spain, with world-class skiing in the winter and outstanding nature reserves.
With over 320 days of sun a year and average temperatures of 20 Centigrade, Granada's Costa Tropical is the ideal holiday destination in Spain. Gentle breezes from North Africa, the warm waters of the Mediterranean and sheltered by the nearby Sierra Nevada make the Costa Tropical Europe's ONLY subtropical climate.
Granada's coastline is known as the Costa Tropical because of its high year-round temperatures. Irrigated by the snowmelt of the Sierra Nevada, the Costa Tropical has ideal growing conditions for sugar cane, avocados and fruit that are generally found in more southern climes. There are several towns along the coast that are worth visiting. From Malaga, the first resort on the Costa Tropical is La Herradura, named after the horseshoe (herradura) shape of its bay, has retained its friendly character.
La Herradura is one of the few remaining unspoilt villages on Spain's southern coast and offers a truly Spanish experience. The pueblo of La Herradura enjoys over 2 kilometres of beach with a wooden pier and some great chiringuito beach bars. On the eastern arm of the bay is the beautiful headland of Punta De La Mona and, to the west, the dramatic outcrop of the Cerro Gordo.
The village overlooks the beachfront and has all the essential shops, banks and services one could need including an indoor market. There are numerous friendly bars with sunny terraces and a great choice of restaurants. Leisure pursuits include sailboards, canoes, dinghies, jet skis and pedalos. La Herradura is a well known centre for scuba diving, and there are several schools offering expert tuition.
Inland is the region of Las Alpujarras, a land of sunshine, snow-capped mountains and stunning scenery.
From the spectacular peaks, rising to over 10,000 feet, the Sierra Nevada slopes southwards, crossed by deep, wooded
gorges and breathtaking countryside. There are panoramic views in all directions, and sometimes at sunset, the Rif
mountains of Morocco are clearly visible, 200kms across the Mediterranean.
The higher slopes are lined with pine forests, with chestnut, walnut and cherry trees further down. The valleys
turn to almonds, olive groves and vines, and then to orange and lemon, pomegranate and quince. The mountains fall
steeply into the coves and beaches of the Mediterranean. La Alpujarra is home to mountain goats, wild boar, foxes,
eagles, goshawks and partridge, whilst sheep and goats graze the hillsides.
The Moors took refuge in these mountains, fighting their last battles in La Alpujarra, and their legacy is to be
seen in the distinctive architecture and the irrigation systems which still feed water from the melting snows in the sierras above.
The architecture is unique in Europe, being identical to Berber villages in the Atlas mountains of Northern Africa.
