Fuengirola, Costa del Sol
Villa and Apartment Holidays
Fuengirola
is in the province of Malaga, on the Costa del Sol. To the north of Fuengirola
are the towns of Benalmadena and Mijas, and it is about 30km south-west of the
city of Malaga.
The climate is typically Mediterranean and has an annual average temperatures of 18 degrees Centigrade, and around 3,000 hours of sunshine per year.
Founded by the Phoenicians, Fuengirola has been inhabited by the Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths and Arabs among others, before it became part of the Crown of Castile in 1485. Today Fuengirola is a major tourist resort, attracting over a quarter of a million visitors during the summer months, and offering hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, discothèques, sports clubs, a yacht harbour and 5 miles of wonderful broad beaches along a promenade extending east and west from the town. There are seven sandy beaches in Fuengirola, including the Carvajal, Torreeblanca, Las Gaviotas, Los Boliches, San Francisco, Sta. Amalia and El Egido.
There is plenty of entertainment in Fuengirola during the evenings and at night, and during the summer months the Fuengirola nightlife can be frenetic. The most popular areas for the best choice of bars and restaurants are around the Fuengirola marina and the seafront promenade.
The famous Bioparc Fuengirola zoo was modernized in 2001 and now houses its collection of animals in their natural habitats, or "tropical-forest" areas. The zoo specializes in captive breeding of many endangered species, and has a research group specialising in chimpanzees. During July and August, the zoo remains open until 1.00 am allowing you to observe nocturnal species, such as leopards, flying foxes and porcupines. The forest paths are illuminated by artificial moonlight and forest sound effects fill the air, creating a Disney-theme park feel. At the end of your moonlight jungle trip you can enjoy a meal in one of the zoo's themed restaurants. For the kids there is a large play area with a miniature farm. The zoo is perfect for those with limited since the grounds are mostly flat and accessible.
Local Spanish fishermen still sail from Fuengirola's old port. The Arab castle of Suhayl (or Sohail), situated outside the town on a hill commands an impressive view over Fuengirola and the sea, and has become the town's symbol. It was an abandoned ruin until renovations were started in 1995, and by 2000 the interior of the castle was completely renovated. The castle was then used to host festivals and concerts throughout the summer. The landscaping was completed in 2002 and today the castle is one of the highlights of Fuengirola's cultural and historical heritage.
Fuengirola has many high-rise apartment blocks, especially near the seafront, but there are still some narrow streets to be found lined with traditional townhouses. The main commercial and retail developments are a little inland, towards the north of the town, and a large branch of El Corte Ingles was opened in 2006 in Las Lagunas.
There is a train station in Fuengirola served by trains running from Malaga airport to the centre of Fuengirola every 30 minutes. Buses are also available, taking about 30 minutes from the airport, or taxies are readily available for around 25 Euros.
