The Costa Almeria, the northern most coastal region in Andalucia, is between the Costa del Sol and the Costa Calida. Almeria province is famous for its spectacular desert landscapes and idyllic coastline.
Inland Almeria is the home of Europe's only true desert where many "Spaghetti Western" films were produced. The unspoilt coast with its hidden coves and sandy beaches has many interesting and historic towns such as Mojacar with its Arabic archways, cobbled streets and 17 km of wonderful sandy beaches.
The Province of Almeria has nearly 320 km of scenic mountainous coastline. The tourist resorts along the coast offer excellent modern facilities, yet are unspoilt and attractive. The Costa Almeria has a well deserved reputation for its many beautiful natural attractions, traditional fishing villages, fine sandy beaches and plenty of golf courses.
The Costa Almeria has centuries of history, dating from the Phoenicians, Romans, and Visigoths, drawn to its shores by its natural beauty and strategically important maritime location - to the Moors who occupied this part of Spain for over 400 years. The old city of Almeria has an interesting medieval architecture, and is a delight to stroll through, with its tranquil squares, colonnades and arches. It also has a fascinating archaeological museum and unique cave dwellings in the hillside above the old gypsy quarter.
The famous old town of Mojacar is set in the Sierra Cabrera, just a few minutes from the beautiful coastline of Mojacar Playa with over 17 Km of sandy beaches. This compact town has many Arabic archways, cobbled streets and white washed houses, and is the perfect place to enjoy the distinctive Andalucian cuisine.
The medieval village of Turre is close to Mojacar, and today is a convenient, modern resort for both residents and holiday-makers. The wealthy town of Vera is popular with tourists attracted by its its famous cuisine and friendly locals. The town has a fascinating history and a beautiful coastline with 5 km of fine white sand with sparkling clean, crystal-clear waters. Attractive mountains overlook the breathtaking Vera marina and bays.
On the Cabo de Gata peninsula is Andalucia's largest coastal nature park - a tranquil park extending to about 34,000 hectares. The Sierra de Cabo de Gata has volcanic mountains, sand dunes, attractive beaches and hidden coves. making the area popular for fishing, sailing, underwater photography, windsurfing, mountain biking and off-road driving.
Just 30 minutes by car from the coast is Albox - the authentic Spain, with time-honoured traditions which are still practiced here. Tuesdays are busy when the locals come to trade anything from chickens, rabbits and goats to trees or tractors. The streets are closed off for the market which sells fresh fruit, vegetables and bread.
